The Mousetrap

by Agatha Christie

The Mousetrap

by Agatha Christie

Early one winter afternoon, a brutal murder occurs on Culver Street in Paddington. Witnesses heard someone whistling the nursery rhyme “Three Blind Mice” just before the victim had screamed.

30 miles away, a group of strangers is stranded in a boarding house during a snow storm, one of whom could be the murderer. The suspects include a newly married couple, a spinster, an architect, a retired Army major, a foreign gentleman, and a magistrate. Into their midst, comes a policeman. He no sooner arrives, when someone is killed which leads him to the conclusion: “Two mice cancelled out  a third mouse still to be dealt with”. So, who is the next victim? Will the murderer be unmasked in time to stop more deaths?

The Mousetrap has kept audiences guessing about these answers and many more for over six decades in this classic who-done-it by the master of British murder mysteries, Agatha Christie.

Jean is preparing a birthday dinner for her mild-mannered accountant husband Henry.  Good friends Betty and Vic are expected any minute, and Jean is frantic because Henry is late.  When he eventually arrives, Jean finds him not quite the man he used to be.  He wants to emigrate to Barcelona immediately, and with good reason: the briefcase he accidentally picked up on the Underground is stuffed with bundles of fifty pound notes amounting to £735,000!  But if getting the money was easy, keeping it proves harder, as not one but two police inspectors call and Henry, Vic, Betty and a bemused (and tipsy) Jean are forced into a frantic game of cat and mouse.  Hilarious innuendo and cruelly funny turns of fate ensue as the two couples assume all sorts of identities in their battle to keep the money.  Will they succeed?  The cabby Bill has the answer!
