The Bodensee Players 17th production "If We Are Women" by Joanna McClelland Glass was presented on February 14, 16, 17, 18 and 20, 2005 in the Atrium Theatre.

Synopsis

"Wir möchten, Polly, dass du von uns lernst !"

Die 18-jährige Poly möchte am liebsten alles vergessen, was sie gehört hat. An einem warmen Juni-Abend sitzen Pollys Großmütter und ihre Mutter Jessica zusammen auf der Veranda eines Sommerhauses in Connecticut und unterhalten sich über ihr Leben und ihre Vergangenheit. Eine Woche nach dem Tod von Jessicas Freund findet Polly zwei alte Karten für das Musical "South Pacific" - mit wem kann er zur Aufführung gegangen sein, als Jessica geschäftlich verreist war? Hatte er eine Affäre?

Warum verließ Jessicas Mutter Ruth nie ihren alkoholsüchtigen, gewalttätig Ehemann? Rachel, Jessicas Ex-Schwiegermutter, war nie ganz einverstanden mit Jessicas Erziehungsmethoden. Obwohl jüdischer Abstammung, bezeichnet sie sich selbst als Agnostikerin.

Und warum ist Polly so aufgeregt, als sie zu den drei Frauen auf der Veranda stößt, einen Tag nach dem High School Ball?

What eighteen-year old Polly REALLY wants to do is disregard all that she's heard. As they gather together on a June's summer evening on a Connecticut beach house deck, Polly's two grandmothers and her mother Jessica discuss their pasts and their present. Just one week after the death of Jessica's partner, she finds two old tickets for the musical "South Pacific" which he attended while she was away on business-who did he take to the performance? Was he having an affair? Why did Jessica's mother Ruth never leave her alcoholic, violent husband and quit the small Canadian prairie town? Rachel, Jessica's mother-in-law from her marriage to Polly's father, has never quite come to terms with Jessica's style of parenting, and though Jewish, she proclaims herself "an agnostic".

And why is Polly so nervous as she approaches the three women on the deck, the night after her high school dance?

Virginia Woolf once wrote, "We think back through our mothers, if we are women." Wry observations on Chekhov, prejudice, education, crocheting, food, farming, and the stresses of daily life all blend beautifully in this crossword-puzzle theatre piece about the fate of these women...and the men in their lives.
